Chicken Soup Apartment Building, Columbia University, Sculptures and Gargoyles, Upper WestsideThe builder of the Apartments at 527 West 110th street adorned the exterior with gargoyles depicting the Story Of Chicken Soup. If you look closely you can see one has the recipe, one the bowl, another the chicken, while a fourth enjoys the soup. It is pretty clever.

I have lived here in this neighborhood for 46 years and I did not know this. I am ashamed.

I didn’t know it either. When I was shooting these pictures a sweet little old lady tugged on my sleeve and told me the whole tale. She said her father would tell her the story every time they walked by and that in those days everyone new what they were.

Thank you for these *wonderful* photos! I’ve linked to them from my LJ memoir of living in that building

inspired by the NYTimes’ recent feature about it

They didn’t even track down the chicken soup story! Good for you. Keep on doin’
e
LOL!!!
That is the same thing I thought when I read the piece in the ny times. They seemed to have tracked down the quarry that produced the stones for the building but missed the real story.
Thanks for your nice comments,
Chris
