NY- Roosevelt Island- Renwick Ruins- Island Hospital

Ξ October 7th, 2007 | → 2 Comments | ∇

What do St. Patrick’s Cathedral and The Island Hospital have in common? They were both designed by the famous 19th Century architect James Renwick Jr.

Today you can tour the ruins of this hospital, New York City’s only registered historic ruin, that served as smallpox infirmary, insane asylum, prison ward, and poor house. It is lit at night and quite an eerie sight. I have always wanted to get up close after seeing Michael J. Fox in The Secret of My Success buy it in order to turn it in to a hotel, and was lucky enough to get the chance when I went to Roosevelt Island to visit The Encampment.

NY- Roosevelt Island- The Encampment- Thom Sokoloski

Ξ October 5th, 2007 | → 0 Comments | ∇

I took the Roosevelt Island Tram over to see The Encampment By Thom Sokoloski. It was quite fascinating. He had set up 100 Civil War Canvas Tents on the Southpoint of the island next to the old asylum. They were illuminated from within and each one told a different story about the people who had been interned in the Island Hospital between 1828 and 1955.

Unfortunately the show only runs from October 5-7 so you only have two more days to see it. It’s open to the public from 7pm- 1am and is left lit every night until 7am. If you have the chance go see it.
