NY- King Ladyslaw Jagiello Stands Guard over Turtle Pond

After The invasion of Poland in 1939 this statue was moved from the Polish pavilion at the World’s Fair in Queens’ Flushing Meadows-Corona Park to storage. In 1945 the Polish government in exile donated the monument to the City and it was rededicated at its current location standing guard over Turtle Pond in Central Park.

The inscription reads, “Wladyslaw Jagiello- King of Poland- Grand Duke of Lithuania- 1386-1434- Founder of a free union of the peoples of East Central Europe- Victor over the Teutonic Agressors at Grunwold- July 15, 1410
