We have barely had time to get over the loss of Barnes and Nobles on the Upper Westside to a rent increase when H&H Bagels, the standard barer of all bagels, announced it is closing their store on West 80th Street, over a rent dispute. Talk about unsettling.
I took a walk around Broadway from 72nd Street to 8oth and was astounded by how many storefronts are awaiting the wrecking ball. One of the greatest advantages of living in New York is the energy you get from the city’s constant churning towards and unattainable equilibrium. It is also sometimes one of it’s most heartbreaking aspects. I’ll miss you H&H.
