What do St. Patrick’s Cathedral and The Island Hospital have in common? They were both designed by the famous 19th Century architect James Renwick Jr.
Today you can tour the ruins of this hospital, New York City’s only registered historic ruin, that served as smallpox infirmary, insane asylum, prison ward, and poor house. It is lit at night and quite an eerie sight. I have always wanted to get up close after seeing Michael J. Fox in The Secret of My Success buy it in order to turn it in to a hotel, and was lucky enough to get the chance when I went to Roosevelt Island to visit The Encampment.

i went there to investigate and then medicine bottles dropped and then we heard a crash and we went to see what it was and it was a wheel chair :O
:0 :* i will never see things the same anymore
Freaky, the place looks spooky enough from the outside. You are very brave, or crazy, lol.

would you be able to go inside the ababdoned hospital???
Hi Leilani,
The hospital is fenced off with chain link but I am sure there are places to get in, hence the graffiti. I’d be more concerned with the structural integrity of the place if I went inside. In the day it would be easier, as long as you watched your step you’ll probably be fine. But at night you wouldn’t be able to see without attracting attention.
