There is a great Statue commemorating Juan Pablo Duarte 1813- 1876, Founder of the Dominican Republic. It is located in Duarte Square at the corner of Canal Street and Avenue of the Americas in Soho and offers a unique view of the Empire State Building.

Thanks Cosme!
The book entitled “Quisqueya, A Nation in the World”, Juan Pablo Duarte is depicted as naming “Quisqueya†the country which denomination is derived from the name of the island as “Island of Santo Domingo†(henceforth: Dominican Republic). Since the island is shared by other country (Haiti) that has the island named “Haitiâ€, the USA Agency to Standard Names decided to use the name “Hispaniola†for the island since 1936. The credit for Duarte naming his country Quisqueya is not yet given for a series of errors and omissions in the history of the Island of Santo Domingo. The book is to come out before the end of 2011.
